Construction of the U.S. Air Force Academy

April 1, 1954…President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation to begin construction of the U.S. Air Force Academy. An advisory commission was established to determine the site of the new school. The original 582 sites considered were pared down to three: Alton, Illinois; Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; and what ultimately became their choice: Colorado Springs, Colorado.
