October 26, 1965…The Beatles received Members of the British Empire (MBE) medals from Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. According to John Lennon, the group was so nervous beforehand that they got high on marijuana in a palace bathroom. During the ceremony, when Her Majesty asked them how long they'd been together, 25-year-old Ringo Starr replied "forty years."

It was the first such honor given to a rock band, causing many former recipients, distinguished military personnel in particular, to return their medals in disgust. Lennon responded, "Lots of people who complained about us receiving the MBE received theirs for heroism in the war, for killing people. We received ours for entertaining other people. I'd say we deserve ours more." When asked how he enjoyed meeting Queen Elizabeth II, John said "She's much nicer than she is in the photos."
