February 9, 1825…Because no candidate had received a majority of electoral votes, it was up to the U.S. House of Representatives to elect the country's sixth president. John Quincy Adams was chosen on the first ballot. He took the oath of office March 4 on a book of laws, instead of the more traditional Bible, to preserve the separation of church and state.
