The Risks of Extreme Heat Posted Wednesday, August 26, 2015 06:26 AM Extreme heat causes more than 600 deaths a year, according to the National Center for Environmental Health. All together, that's more than tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and lightning combined. Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein which increase metabolic heat. Listen to your body. Heat cramps are one of the first signs of illness. Muscular pains and spasms, usually in the abdomen or legs, are due to loss of water and salt from excessive sweating. Be able to identify heat stroke. This life threatening condition causes hot, red and dry skin; changes in consciousness; rapid, weak pulse; and rapid, shallow breathing. Know when to act. If a person refuses water, vomits or loses consciousness, seek medical attention immediately. You can learn more about how to plan and prepare by checking out these Extreme Heat Tips from FEMA. |
