It may not have the cobbled streets and old-world charm of some destinations on this list, but St Louis, with its impressive skyscrapers and iconic 1960s Gateway Arch, has its own special charm. Washington University in St Louis has a beautiful hilltop campus that overlooks Greater St Louis and was given National Historic Landmark status in 1987.
